The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Jeff with Santa

Wednesday, December 25, 1963 DOROTHEA CALLED

A nice day. Fern, Lloyd and Bob here for dinner. Mama had a heart attack this morning. Not good all day. Had a nice lot of gifts and a delicious dinner thanks to Fern. Turkey, roast pork, gravies, mashed potato, turnip, peas, onions, salad, pickles, rolls, date filled, butter crunch pies, chocolate cake, white cake, chocolate ice cream, vanilla ice cream. Mama had a heart attack. Kennie, Dot, Aunt Ava, Uncle Lewis here in p.m. To work at five. Billie gone all day. Ugh. Best of all talked with Dot, Den and Jeff.

Well, Christmas is over and I’m so glad. Betty got the tree out and cleaned up from it all. Fern and Lloyd called. To work at three. Billie didn’t work. Betty was so good and helpful so much.

$49. Blanche here all day. Mama up and dressed today. She was mad because we had the doctor. She is in bad shape. Dr. Bish tested Carmen’s water, she has infection in it. Dolores comes back today. Bill mad at Betty about not coming back with the car. He made her mad and me too. He acts like a damn fool, it doesn’t help him anymore than it ever did.
