The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

October 17 - 20, 1963

Thursday, October 17, 1963

Another nice beautiful day. I churned. Then we took off for Portland. Betty shopped for herself. She is the most pleased girl I have ever seen in a long time. I like so much to see her happy. She dressed up and went to town to show them off. She is so proud and happy. She got shoes, sneakers, slacks and slippers and a jacket.

Another hot dry day. I worked all day. Cleaned up the kitchen. Betty don’t seem to be too well. She and I to town after I got supper and got the dishes washed. Then Betty back to town. Got a card from Deming’s. Julie Conant called and Fern and Lloyd.

Saturday, October 19, 1963 Letter from Mike

Another hot dry day. No rain in sight. I cooked, made a chocolate birthday cake for Fern. Betty and Carmen to town. Betty to the ballgame with Kay. Then to town again tonight. I like to have her have a good time. A letter she got from Mike. A nice one and she is glad. Mike’s letter. Bill and I got a pretty card from Adair’s. Dolores called, Kennard and Blanche. Fern here for supper. Heifer went to the slaughterhouse.

Still dry, very mild. Didn’t get up as early. Wilbur Moulton called. I was so late getting the work done up. Cleaned up Mama’s room. Also all the downstairs. Kennie, Dot called. Bonnie called with Betty. They cleaned the car up. Billie hauled water.
