The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

October 6 - 10, 1960



Thursday, October 6, 1960 Killed Hens

Betty Smith’s birthday. Today Billie and I killed the old hens. Bill dressed them out at night. 17. Aunt Ava called. It rained by showers today. Cleared about four in p.m. Betty not home all day. No school, teachers convention. Rained by showers.



Friday, October 7, 1960

A nice day. Betty home all day. In evening she went down to Rowena’s. Mike over here. I cleaned up rest of the house. Churned etc. Quite busy all day. To town in evening.



Saturday, October 8, 1960

A very nice day. Blanche and I went to Fryeburg Fair. A very nice fair this year. Very big crowds. Betty over there last night with Mike and other kids. Rowena and Doug. I cooked just a cake. Mama for a ride with Aunt Ava and Uncle Lewis. Charles Virgin called with Lloyd. Bill and Dr. Nash watched ballgame’s. Billie worked up to Chet’s.



Sunday, October 9, 1960

Nice day. Mike and Betty came. Betty stayed down to Rowena’s last night. They and Doug all went out for the evening. Bill sawed the wood. Billie hauled sawdust.



Monday, October 10, 1960

A nice day. I washed. Tonight when Betty came home, Rowena and Linda came with her. They went to a baby shower. Then they came home and studied.

October 2 - 5, 1960



Sunday, October 2, 1960 Got Wood

A very nice day. I was up quite early. Kennie and Dot came and we went for a ride. We went way up to Rangeley in northern Maine. It sure is pretty up there, their mountains, lakes, rivers and the pretty colored leaves. Also went up to where they go hunting. Lloyd came up and cut up rest of the meat. Bill hauled rest of the wood. Pullets laid 11 eggs.



Monday, October 3, 1960

A nice day, on the windy side. I wash the clothes, dried good. Betty home early from school. Got 14 eggs.



Tuesday, October 4, 1960

On the cold side. I ironed, done up the work. Wrote to Esther. Kay came up with Betty tonight. They had their proofs tonight when they got home. They were good. Got 15 pullets eggs.



Wednesday, October 5, 1960

I mailed the pictures to Dorothea today. I done up some odds and end jobs. Took care of the plants in the flower boxes. Rowena came home with Betty tonight. They have gone to a slumber party at Beverly Lamberts at North Bridgton.

Tuesday, September 27, 1960

I ironed and churned, had a nice roast beef supper tonight from new beef. Very good. Rowena here all night. Betty had pictures taken today at school for graduation. Betty home early from school again tonight. Judy bred last night.



Wednesday, September 28, 1960

Partly cloudy. I didn’t do much today. Mama didn’t get up till late. She was dizzy. Judy bred during the night.

I ironed. Cloudy and rained. I ironed, cleaned up the downstairs. Betty downtown tonight. We went to town tonight grocery shopping.



Saturday, October 1, 1960 Pullets

I cooked. Cleaned up the kitchen. Lloyd up in p.m. and cut up a quarter of beef. Very cold today. Betty to town. Got the pullets. Billie and Art Ward went over to Joe Trues at Lovell and got 18 pullets.

September 23 - 26, 1960



Friday, September 23, 1960

Warm. I done up the work, ironed. Picked about 3 bushel shell beans. Blanche here all day. She was in the hospital in Portland Tuesday and had her tonsils removed. She came home last night. In evening Bill and I to town. Billie done chores up to Chet’s. Kennard, Kennie and Dot here in evening. Betty and Rowena came up and went back with Kennie and Dot to the movies. Betty and Row gone to movies.



Saturday, September 24, 1960

Cloudy all day. I cooked in a.m. Dawn and George called in their new Volkswagen. Betty down to Rowena’s all day, in p.m. we went to Norway. Betty and I with Bessie and Rowena spent a lot of money. In evening Bessie gave Betty another permanent.



Sunday, September 25, 1960

A nice sunny day. In a.m. Lloyd came up and they cut up the two forward quarters of beef. Aunt Ava and Uncle Lewis called. Also Raymond. Betty’s hair looked very nice this morning. She and Rowena back down to Rowena’s to study. I wrote to Esther, cleaned up the electric stove. Billie and I defrosted deep-freeze. Bill dug potatoes. Billie picked pumpkins, melons, squash and rest of cukes.



Monday, September 26, 1960 Letter from Dorothea

Seniors having their pictures taken today. I washed. Rowena here tonight. Kay came up and here for supper. Betty home early from school, a surprise. A letter from Dorothea today.

Nice and sunny this a.m. Clouded up during the day. Done up regular work. Billie up to Waterford with Art Ward. Bill over to (?) Rumy’s. Kennard called. Kay came up tonight for all night. David called during the evening.



Monday, September 19, 1960

Partly cloudy. I washed, picked some beans. Dot and Kennie called tonight. Rowena up here after school. Betty, David and Kay over to Auburn to see Mike tonight on the eve of his birthday. Betty took him a gift.



Tuesday, September 20, 1960

Dorothea and Dennis married three years today. Michael C Boutiler is 17 today. Dorothea Gammon Smith died 50 years ago today. We sent her driver’s license today.



Wednesday, September 21, 1960

Cloudy in a.m., cleared in p.m. Betty home from school early. Back down to Rowena’s to study. I mailed Dorothea’s license to her today. Got apples ready to make some jelly. Thena called late in p.m.



Thursday, September 22, 1960

A nice warm day. Mama down to Ferns all day. I washed, churned, cleaned up the house. Art Ward called after supper. Betty and Rowena called after school. Betty down to Rowena’s all night. I made some jelly.

September 15 -17, 1960



Thursday, September 15, 1960 Fire in new stove

Been quite a nice day. I’ve been busy. Well, I had a fire in this little stove. It has been so nice and warm. I picked a lot of shell beans, also corn. We shelled the beans and I finished getting them into the freezer after supper. Rowena here all night. Raymond here for supper. Kennie and Dot called. I mailed a wedding anniversary card to Dorothea and Denny.



Friday, September 16, 1960

I been busy all day. To town in evening. Roger McDonald brought a car here for Bill to see but he want at home. Betty out tonight but home early.



Saturday, September 17, 1960 Letter from ADAIR

A very nice day. Cooked, churned, cleaned up downstairs. Dawn up here and her mother. They done Betty’s hair. Betty to town tonight. Bill and Billie pulled the onions. I used the new stove for cooking. Beans were very good tonight. A letter from Dorothea, was so glad to hear from her.
