The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

July 22 - 26, 1960



Friday, July 22, 1960

Betty got through work tonight. She has gone out with Mike, also David and Gloria. Today I picked the first mess of peas. Did up regular work and cleaned up downstairs. After supper Bill and I went to town. A fair day, nice and warm.



Saturday, July 23, 1960

A nice day, very hot. Betty drove the car up in the field. I cooked some, done up the work. I churned.



Sunday, July 24, 1960

A very nice day. Didn’t get up very early. Raymond here for supper. Fern, Lloyd called. Bob and Blanche. Lloyd, Bill, Raymond, Bill, Betty and I all played croquet after supper. Billie and I cleaned up the two cars.



Monday, July 25, 1960

A very nice day. I washed, cooked some. Been very busy. Dawn called. Betty went down with her for a few days visit. In evening I called at Ferns and over to Aunt Ava’s. Today the Republican convention began today. Bill worked over to Jim’s tonight. I wrote to Susan today. She is in camp.

 



Tuesday, July 26, 1960

Another nice day. I did a big ironing. I made a pie, I picked 2nd peas. Kennard called and Kennie and Dot in evening. Bill over to Jim’s to work tonight.
