The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

August 8 - 12, 1960



Monday, August 8, 1960

Cloudy and showers in a.m. I washed. It cleared off about noon. Betty and Norma went downtown. I fixed string beans and canned them. In evening I went down to Lila and Bills with Aunt Ava. When Aunt Ava brought me home, there was a surprise birthday for me again. Got nice gifts and had a good time etc. Bill finished working over to Jim’s tonight.



Tuesday, August 9, 1960

A very nice cool day. I picked peas and beans, froze beans. Erma Wheeler here for the day and supper. Betty and Norma to town in p.m. Bonnie Denning came up and stayed all night.


Wednesday, August 10, 1960

Cloudy and rainy today. I didn’t do things I plan to do. I cooked. Kids up and to town with Bonnie. I been picking over some things upstairs.



Thursday, August 11, 1960

A very nice day. After cleared off in mid-forenoon. I washed, done some windows etc. Milan came in late p.m. He took kids, Mama and I for a ride in the car he came in.



Friday, August 12, 1960

A very nice day. I cleaned up all the upstairs downstairs bedrooms and the living room. Norma went today, Milan came after her. Bill and I to town after supper. Betty down to movies. $47 from Dr. Nash paid to August 25 with $14 credit for Dr. Nash.
