The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

May 29 - June 1, 1960 Joy and family Home



Sunday, May 29, 1960

Another nice day. When I got up this morning, had most of my work done. Went to town. Betty got some things and we had a cookout. Fern and Lloyd were here. Aunt Ava called and Blanche. Rayburn and Dot up here early this morning. Today was our first cookout. Betty’s leg a little better this morning. Milan’s folks left about 12:15 tonight for home. Milan painted some on the kitchen roof.

Monday, May 30, 1960 Plowed

Another nice day. I washed. Bill finished painting roof. Billie done odds and end things. Gordon Sanborn came today and plowed. Gordon, Sally, Jean and family called tonight. Blanche called and Dawn brought Betty home. She spent the day up there. Betty’s leg better. Bill’s finger about the same. Bill finished painting the kitchen roof. Steel roofing.



Tuesday, May 31, 1960 JOY and family CAME

Rain again all day hard. I did the work, ironed, cooked. Bill took Blanche to Portland to meet  Joy and her family. Bill to the doctor again today. Betty to doctor too but didn’t see him. Her leg is still swollen awful bad. Bill to the doctors.

Wednesday, June 1, 1960

Rain again. I cleaned up the house. Joy, Buddy, Debbie and Blanche called in the p.m. Betty home late, up to Irene’s and babysitting till late. Her leg wasn’t swollen quite so much tonight. Jean and Sally called. Bill still home from work. Things sure look gray these days. Bill got the back porch roof done.
