The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

June 10 - 13, 1960



Friday, June 10, 1960 CALF BORN

Judy had a BULL Calf this afternoon. Over 100 pounds. I ironed. Cleaned up the downstairs. Betty came home from Irene’s about three. She made cookies, washed dishes after supper. WOW. She helped me a lot yesterday too. Billie and Bobby got haircuts tonight. To town tonight for groceries. Another nice day.



Saturday, June 11, 1960

A fair day. Cool East wind today. I cooked this morning. In p.m. Betty mowed lawns. I fixed my plants. In late p.m. Dawn, Steve came up for supper. Dawn gave me a croquet set. Bill, Betty, Dawn and I had a game. Billie up to Chet’s this p.m.



Sunday, June  12, 1960

A cloudy day but very warm. Nice all-around. Tonight they seeded the ground. Billie mowed the pasture, roadside etc. Gordon Brill called and Dawn.




Monday, June 13, 1960

A very nice day. I washed, got the clothes in about 1 o’clock. Linda Berry came up here to stay all night. Bill away in evening. Billie and Betty. Bill painted the kitchen floor one coat tonight.
