The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

August 21 - 24, 1960



Sunday, August 21, 1960

Didn’t get up very early. Made me behind all day with my work. Bill worked over to Jim’s. Had a cookout at Ferns in evening. Betty went with David Nevers to take Gloria home. This is been a sleepless past week. Mike went back home today. He and Betty went out a lot this past week.



Monday, August 22, 1960

A very nice day. I did a very big wash. Betty to town in p.m. and didn’t get home till late. We had a terrible shower. I was worried about her. Susan wrote a letter to her father.



Tuesday, August 23, 1960

A nice day, not so hot as yesterday. Lloyd and Billie Deming came up and got Mama and Susan this morning. Susan and Billie went down to the lake swimming. I did a big ironing. Dawn called in p.m. Betty downtown with her. Susan and Betty down through the woods to Ferns in p.m. I picked some beans and greens. In evening kids down town. Bill and I down to Jean’s.



Wednesday, August 24, 1960

A very nice day. Betty worked at Smith’s. I cleaned up the house. Susan here today. I was very busy cleaning up the house, washed floors, picked beans and help Susan churned. Evelyn Ridlons called today with her new grandchild.
