The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

October 2 - 5, 1960

Sunday, October 2, 1960 Got Wood

A very nice day. I was up quite early. Kennie and Dot came and we went for a ride. We went way up to Rangeley in northern Maine. It sure is pretty up there, their mountains, lakes, rivers and the pretty colored leaves. Also went up to where they go hunting. Lloyd came up and cut up rest of the meat. Bill hauled rest of the wood. Pullets laid 11 eggs.

Monday, October 3, 1960

A nice day, on the windy side. I wash the clothes, dried good. Betty home early from school. Got 14 eggs.

Tuesday, October 4, 1960

On the cold side. I ironed, done up the work. Wrote to Esther. Kay came up with Betty tonight. They had their proofs tonight when they got home. They were good. Got 15 pullets eggs.

Wednesday, October 5, 1960

I mailed the pictures to Dorothea today. I done up some odds and end jobs. Took care of the plants in the flower boxes. Rowena came home with Betty tonight. They have gone to a slumber party at Beverly Lamberts at North Bridgton.
