The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

June 2 - 5, 1960



Thursday, June 2, 1960

Cloudy and another miserable day. It cleared off in late p.m. with a persistent East wind. Bill painted or tarred the front porch roof this p.m. Betty came home in late p.m. to get her clothes to go on a cookout at the head of the lake with the FHA. She will stay at Rowena’s all night. Her leg is still swollen.


Friday, June 3, 1960

Another cloudy dismal day. I washed. Betty’s leg swelling starting to go down tonight. It cleared late in p.m.



Saturday, June 4, 1960

A nice day. It cleared during the forenoon. I cleaned up the house. After Billie got home, he and I went to town. Bill up to Durham New Hampshire today with Jim Chadbourne. Also other places. Betty mowed the lawns. Betty’s leg much better. Bill’s finger better.



Sunday, June 5, 1960

A very hot day. In late p.m. it got cooler after showers. I didn’t get up very early. Betty’s leg much better. Bill’s finger better too. Blanche, Joy, Buddy and Steve called. Fern, Lloyd, Kennie and Dot also Aunt Ava.
