The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

January 5- 7, 1972 Bill Home From Boston

Wednesday, January 5, 1972 BILL HAD TEST, HE WAS SICK, BOSTON MASS

A snowy miserable day. Dorothea and I sat there from 11:45 to 6:20 waiting to see Bill. At 20 minutes after six he came back from the recovery room. We stayed with him until about 7 o’clock. Then we left on those thundering, clattering old subways back to the Boston, Sullivan Square, then a bus in a taxi to Verna’s. Then Verna took us to the bus station out to Lynnfield. We got to Dorothea’s about two. She brought me home. Es and Betty went to Portland to meet us. We came on the Trailways. And they went to the Greyhound bus terminal. So everyone got all mixed up. Bill was feeling quite miserable.

Thursday, January 6, 1972 Bill is okay

Nice clear day. Billie is better. I didn’t get up until 11 AM. I have felt quite miserable. Went to bed in p.m. Haven’t eaten much today. I called Bill this afternoon. He is okay and don’t face an operation. He has to go back in a month for another check up. Dorothea brought me home. We got home about 3:30 here. We got to Portland about 10 after two. We left Lynn about 11:30. I went to bed, was real cold and had chills. But during the night I got over the chills and warmed up. Billie was so glad he didn’t have to have the operation. Later tonight we got a call from Bill. He can come home tomorrow. We got to make arrangements for that. Betty called Joy and Buddy is going to pick him up.

Friday, January 7, 1972 BILL CAME HOME

A nice day. Got up a little earlier this morning to make a number of telephone calls. Billie left here to go to Dorothea’s about 12:30. Buddy, Joy and Bill got there to Dorothea’s at about 2 PM. Bill and Billie got home about 3:30. I laid down while they were gone. It was good to have him home from that crazy upsetting place. He was glad to be home. No Place like HOME.

Monday, January 3, 1972 Walt took Bill to the New England Baptist Hospital

This morning about 7:45 we left for Boston. Walt took us up. We was about one hour going to Portland. He got us to the hospital at about 11 o’clock. Bill and I went in and Dorothea. I don’t know what I would have done if it hadn’t been for Dorothea getting me through those old subway stations. She was such a help to me. We was so glad to get out to Verna and Brud’s. We had such a nice time out there. They were so good to us. Kids and all.

Tuesday, January 4, 1972 BOSTON MASS

Rain. Dorothea and I went back to the hospital this morning to see Bill. He was glad to see us. We stayed till quarter of five them we left for Verna’s. When we got to Sullivan Square we took a bus right to Stoneham. We had a miserable day as it rained. I got my head wet and I guess I’m coming down with a cold.
