The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

January 16 - 18, 1972

Sunday, January 16, 1972 cold and windy, Bill sick

A beautiful day but cold and windy. I took a bath. Had breakfast, did regular work. Billie sick again today. I finished looking over some things that came from Aunt Ava’s. In p.m. Bill and I went down to Betty’s. She had a most delicious chicken dinner. Dorothea and Dave were there and Fern and Lloyd. It was just like a Christmas or Thanksgiving meal. Very good.

Monday, January 17, 1972 Zak sick, Walt passed exams, Joy had operation

10 below. Cloudy in a.m. and snowy. Cleared in p.m. Didn’t get much snow, awful icy and slippery. I went down to Betty’s in a.m. Zak sick with a bad cold. I came home, got supper to going, made some phone calls. Watched TV soap operas in p.m. and shows at night. My cold is nearly okay. Billie was better this morning and tonight. Fern has a bad dizziness spell of some kind today. Couldn’t get out of bed till late in PM. Esther down and helped her. I talked with Dorothea. Jeff was taken sick at midnight and threw up. Joy was operated on today. Walt got his test papers back and he passed them. Very good. That will mean so much to them financially.

Tuesday, January 18, 1972 it was a good drying day

Clear and cold this morning. Down to Betty’s for a little while. Kim and Zak like to have me come down. Zak has this bad cold. Bill went down and got my pail today. What a mess, the fish bait has died. I went to town for Betty. I made a apple pie. I washed a few things, dried good outside.
