The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

December 22 - 24, 1971 Christmas Eve

Wednesday, December 22, 1971

It dawned clear, cold and windy. I done up my work, went down to Betty’s. I washed windows, helped her clean up. She made fudge, cookies, pumpkin bread, cornballs. Bill fixed the cellar door. We did a lot of washing.

Down to Betty’s. We put the finishing touches on for the preparations for Christmas. Cleaned, washed and changed things around to make room. Betty washed and waxed floors. It looks very nice down there. I came home, got supper. Bill down fishing on the ice.

A nice day. In early a.m. I did a lot of work getting ready for evening. I was busy all day. Billie home today. After supper I took a bath. Went over to Esther’s a little while. Came home about 7:30 Betty, Walt and kids came, Fern and Lloyd, Es, Cliff and family. We waited for the Thomases. They came about 9:30. We opened our gifts. All had a good time. Jeff stayed here all night. Dorothea and Dave went down to Betty’s to stay all night. We cleaned all up and got to bed about 2 AM.
