The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

October 26 - 29, 1971


Tuesday, October 26, 1971

Mild. Kids back-to-school after the holiday. People back to work. I did some washing. Called at Betty’s. Zak and Kim up in a.m.



Wednesday, October 27, 1971

Another nice mild day. We got around early and went to the Maine Shopping Mall. Betty and I, we took Fern. Dorothea went, was there, she met us. We took Fern all around to show it to her. It is very nice and she enjoyed it very much. I bought one thing. We got Kim home in time to go to school.



Thursday, October 28, 1971

Real hot, mild. We got ready and went to Norway to do a dite of shopping. Kim stayed with Fern. No school this p.m. Es called in evening.



Friday, October 29, 1971

A beautiful day. Bill didn’t work. Still quite mild. I went down, helped Betty to get her living room ready to paint floor and put down a new rug. Bill and I took a ride over and around Pleasant Mountain. A very pretty ride. In p.m. did the shopping. Called at Betty’s. Es called in evening.
