The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

October 18 - 21, 1971


Monday, October 18, 1971 Brownies

A beautiful day. I did a big wash. I done regular work, made a pie. Went down to Betty’s in p.m. for a while. I got my clothes in and after supper did my ironing. Esther called in evening. I called at Fern’s. She wasn’t so good today. Bill worked at Gordon’s. Carmen to brownie’s tonight first time this year. Our 41st wedding anniversary. Cards from Dorothea and family, Betty and family $10 gift. Fern and Lloyd congratulations. Es, Dorothea called this morning.



Tuesday, October 19, 1971

A nice day. Clear in a.m. and cloudy in p.m. Betty and I went shopping (Christmas) at the Maine Mall and Monmouth Mart. Got a lot done.


Wednesday, October 20, 1971

Cloudy in a.m., cleared in p.m. I cleaned kitchen. Went to town with Betty. Betty done a lot of her fall work today. In evening went down to Fern’s. Had a birthday cake and ice cream for her.



Thursday, October 21, 1971

A beautiful day. I washed. I finished cleaning my kitchen. I went to town. Over to Esther’s in evening.
