The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

November 25 - 27, 1971 Thanksgiving, Fern Comes Home, Bad Storm

Thursday, November 25, 1971 FIRST BAD SNOW STORM today about 8 inches

Watch a bad snowy day. We had a nice Thanksgiving dinner. Betty, Walt and Pa and children up here. We had turkey, gravy, stuffing, mashed potato, turnip, onions, shell beans, celery, pickles, olives, salad. Rolls, dark bread, lemon sponge pie, date filled pie, cupcakes, ice cream. A very good dinner, but it is much different than it used to be. We had a good time tho. In evening Joy and family called. No one to hospital to see Fern because of the storm. Lloyd sick with diarrhea.

Friday, November 26, 1971 Fern Came Home

What a mess things are this morning after the awful storm of yesterday. Things are clogged and messed up with snow and slippery and slushy. I did regular work, cooked today. Fern came home today. She looks good now with her skin mess gone. It cleared up good. Betty and Esther down there to cleaned her house up before she came home. I went down to Betty’s to help of the kids. Walt plowed his driveway. Betty didn’t feel good tonight.
