The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

October 10 - 13, 1971 Zak has surgery

Sunday, October 10, 1971

A very heavy rain. I done up regular work. Went to Casco with Es and Cliff to Frances Herman’s 50th wedding anniversary party. It was very nice. Their sons and wives put it on and the grandchildren all help. All had a good time.

Monday, October 11, 1971 Walter a Horton IV

A very nice day, on the cool windy side. Today Zak entered the Maine Medical Center for an operation. Betty and Walt’s company went with them. They went out for supper and rode around Portland, the coastline etc. I took care of Carmen and Kim here for supper, then I went down there to stay till they came home. They had a good evening. Thought of Zak of course. I did a big wash.

Tuesday, October 12, 1971 Walter Ambrose Horton IV

A beautiful day. Today Zak was operated on. A penis operation. Betty and Walt were there. I got Kimmy off to school. Betty and Walt’s company left this morning. Betty called on her way home from hospital. I washed and ironed. In evening I called to see Fern. She still looks awful. She is soaking in the solution the doctors gave her. Irma, Charlie, Bob, Pat, Es, Cliff, Betty and I called to see her in evening.
