The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Thursday, January 20, 1972

A nice day, mild side. Clouded up in late p.m. It began to snow about 3:30 PM. Snowed quite a lot during early evening. It began clearing about 11 in evening. Today I washed windows, slept, dusted, washed clothes and ironed. Went to town and done my shopping. We watched TV in PM. Zak much better today.

Nice clear this morning. Cleared during the night. Bill took Carmen to school. She missed the bus. I went down to Betty’s and babysat all day. Betty to Portland to get bread, donuts. Had lunch with Walt. Betty went with Susan, she went to look for a place to live but found nothing.  Cliff got word today Betty Deming died. They may go out for a few days.

Saturday, January 22, 1972

A nice sunny day. I done up regular work, made bread, rolls, baked white beans. Carmen came up in PM. She is going to stay all night. Betty called to get rolls. Lloyd called. I called at Esther’s a little while. Esther looks awful tired and worried. She worries about her kids. The older they get the harder it is for her. Es and Cliff left about noon for Ohio. Will come back Wednesday or Thursday.
