The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

February 23 - 26, 1972


Wednesday, February 23, 1972 Judd came home

Carmen went home this p.m. Kimmy came up. I washed, did regular work. In a.m. Betty and I went to town. Esther went down to Dorothea’s and Billie, for a couple days. Walt brought Judd home tonight.



Thursday, February 24, 1972

A nice sunny and mild day. I washed, ironed, did regular work. Kimmy went home in p.m. In evening I called at Ferns. Bill plowed yards today with Walt’s tractor.



Friday, February 25, 1972 Cloudy and snow

It snowed some but cleared in late a.m. Bill and I went shopping in a.m. In p.m. I watched or we watched programs. I did some on scraps. Billie down to Gordon’s today. This has been a very cold week.



Saturday, February 26, 1972 Snow

It snowed today. Susan, her kids and a friend of hers upstairs where she lives also went and the three children to Portland. It cleared up in PM. I did a dite of cooking. In late p.m. down to Betty’s. Walt took her out for dinner tonight at Vallee’s Steakhouse and after that to a show Kennie Rogers and The First Edition, Stephen Jackson singers and performers. They enjoyed it so much. Billie with Lawrence down country. Billie is worried about Lawrence, he isn’t too good.
