The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

In p.m. Milan went over to Pete and Anna’s then in evening they came over, Pete, Anna and Milan and got Betty. Esther, Cliff came over and called. Carmen and Kim called after school. Betty cleaned her barn up today.

A beautiful day. Nice, mild and sunny. First nice day for a long time. We are having a bad spring. I made two chocolate cakes, rolls, baked beans, done up my housework. Billie went with Lawrence. I expected Milan’s folks back, but they didn’t come back. Called and said they wouldn’t come till tomorrow morning.

Everyone Loves Nanny

Zak day before he goes into MMC for surgery

Nice and sunny in a.m. for Easter services and church. I got a nice Easter dinner, the Horton’s, and Pa were our guest. Milan and Betty came back and made a call and left for home about 9:30 AM. We had a nice time Sunday. Zak is so cute all the time. Fern, Lloyd called in PM. Billie went with Lawrence. It clouded up and rained in early evening and during night.

Monday, April 3, 1972 Zak to hospital

A cloudy miserable day. Snow and rain. Betty and I up early, got ready to take Zak to the Maine Medical Center for an operation. We called at Dorothea’s. I stayed there. Betty took Zak and Walt met her there. He cried awfully when they left him there. It is so hard to see a kid have to go to the hospital.
