The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

March 5 - 8,1972 Partly REAL haircut!!!


Sunday, March 5, 1972 SNOW      Zak had hair cut

A snowy day. I done regular work, went to town with Betty and Zak. I made out an order for some dahlias. I wrote to Jean. Today Betty gave Zak a partly real haircut.



Monday, March 6, 1972 Hair Set

I did a little washing, it was a nice day. Not too warm. I done up regular work. Went over to June’s, got hair set. Esther down to Susan’s. She had to go to Portland.



Tuesday, March 7, 1972

Snow and snow flurries, no accumulation. Betty, Zak and I went to Portland. I got a few things, birthday cards, writing material etc. Betty shopped also. We got groceries on way home. We saw Walt and Zak was so excited about seeing them. Kimmy stayed with Bill.



Wednesday, March 8, 1972

Cloudy today. Snow and some rain. I went down to Betty’s for a little while. We looked over some of her boxes etc. Came home, made a pie, cooked a roast pork for supper. Ironed. Talked with Fern and Es today and Betty. Carmen came up after school a little while. I worked at my scraps this evening.
