The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

April 20 - 22, 1972 MMC In and Out

Thursday, April 20, 1972 Zak home

A nice day in the p.m. It rained hard in a.m. The snow went a lot with the rain. I done up my work, got ready. Kim and I, we went down to Betty’s, at 9 o’clock we left to go get Zak. We stopped off at Dorothea’s. She went in with us. He was so pleased and happy to come home. He is weak from going through so much in the past three weeks. He is better too. Bill was down there with Carmen and Kim. He cut the tree up for them. Miss Mary Ann Weston called to see Betty. Astronauts landed on the moon.

Friday, April 21, 1972 Kim goes to hospital

Windy. I got up early this morning, got work done up. It was a nice day. Down to Betty’s. Esther there. She stayed with Carmen and Zak while we took Kim to the MAINE MEDICAL CENTER for OPEN HEART SURGERY on the 25th. It was an awful cold and windy day. We stopped and got Dorothea. She went in with us. We did a few errands, had lunch at Deering Ice Cream Restaurant. Kimmy got there and was entered at 2 PM. We stayed with her for about an hour. She was very brave about all this. Very unusual for such a small child. When I got home Carmen came up to stay all night until Sunday after supper.

Saturday, April 22, 1972 Bill and I into see Kim tonight, Dorothea went with us

Bill worked at Gordon’s. Clear in the morning. I cooked etc. Betty brought Zak up about 10:30. She was on her way to the Maine Medical Center to see Kim. Walt home working, doing his spring chores. Dorothea and Jeff came about 11 AM. She pitched right in and helped with all the work. Billie cleaned the garage, washed floor and all. He cleaned driveway and raked a dite outside. Dorothea and I got lunch. Jeff and Carmen had a good time. Zak was very good. Kim is okay but kind of lonesome Betty said. She got back about 2:30. Bill worked today at Gordon’s. Billie and Lloyd down country and looking for cattle. Billie and Cliff on a Scout outing (overnight.) After supper Bill and I got ready, took the Thomases home, their car wasn’t ready. So we went into see Kim. She was quite lonesome.
