The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

February 15 - 18, 1972


Tuesday, February 15, 1972 Mild, a very good day

Temperatures up in 40s and 50s today. Very nice and mild. Snow settled some. Ice melted a lot today. Bill and I to town in a.m. Bill took me down to Betty’s while she went to town. I washed a few things, done regular work. Kennard called in PM. Also in afternoon Bonnie called at Betty’s. In evening Betty and I over to Es and Cliff’s to take some pictures of Billie to have for himself and friends. Called at Ferns a little while. Betty took some things down.



Wednesday, February 16, 1972

Another nice day. I did a little more washing. I went to Raymond with Betty. In p.m. Kim came up. We, Bill, Kim and I drove down by the new house Dawn and Ed are having built. Watched TV programs. Another nice day. Not quite as warm as yesterday. Fern down to Frances and Herman’s, Lila is bad. Dr. says no chance at all for her. I washed and ironed today.



Thursday, February 17, 1972 Betty, 29 years today.

Walt gave Betty a brand-new components set (musical) for her birthday. I went down to Betty’s today. She cleaned up her house while I looked after Zak. I washed today.



Friday, February 18, 1972 Joy’s birthday

Did regular work. To town.
