The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

January 27 - 30, 1972


Thursday, January 27, 1972 10 below, New Coat

I done regular work. Bill is so uneasy, nothing to do. Talked with Es. Today Betty took me to Portland and bought me a brand-new coat, maroon (light). We got it at Jordan Marsh. Very pretty and I like it very much. Dorothea went with us. A nice clear day cold.



Friday, January 28, 1972

Kim came up in PM. We invited her to stay all night. I went to town today, Betty took me. Done regular work. We went down to the Cemetery when Velma was brought up for burial. Fern and me, Betty drove us down.



Saturday, January 29, 1972

 I didn’t make rolls today. I baked beans. Kim still here. I done up regular work. Lloyd and Cliff got rubbish yesterday. It turned out to be a nice day. Billie to town, Bill and Christy out riding.



Sunday, January 30, 1972

Nice sunny day. I didn’t get up too early. Before I got my work done up, Es and Cliff came. Esther did a good job fixing my coat. It looks very good. They were here for supper, Billie too also Kim. Billie off with Lawrence to get cattle. Got home about 8:30 or nine. Fern and Lloyd called, first time since Christmas.
