The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

January 23 - 26, 1972


Sunday, January 23, 1972

A nice sunny day. I done regular work. Carmen up and enjoying herself. She took a bath and shower. I did a dite of washing. Carmen went over to Zenya’s for a little while. She had a new record she wanted Carmen to hear. She came back, I had a nice roast beef supper. Billie Deming was here. Billie went with Lawrence today picking up cattle.



Monday, January 24, 1972

Cloudy in a.m., it cleared and was a nice sunny day. Betty went to Norway and So. Paris. Susan too. I took care of Zak, Chris, Monica and Kim. Bill came down and plowed driveway with Walt’s tractor, also plowed his own. I came home, watched afternoon TV. Got supper. Got a letter from Peg today.



Tuesday, January 25, 1972

Cloudy and heavy rain showers. It cleared about 10:30 AM. I done regular work, washed. Dorothea came up for a short visit. We went down to Betty’s. She also took me to town. Bill down to Gordon’s, he had car trouble. So he and Gordon fixed that. Gordon had a bad accident with the new town truck. Velma Staley died this morning.




 


Wednesday, January 26, 1972 hair set, 8 below this morning

A very cold and windy day. I done up my work, got ready. Betty took me over to June’s. I got my hair set. Bill down to Gordon’s. Gordon went to the doctors. He is just bruised, no broken bones. Es and Cliff got home about 3:30 this p.m. The wind has blown hard all day. Very cold. It blowed awful hard last night.
