The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

April 16 - 19, 1972


Sunday, April 16, 1972

It has been better day today then for a long time. Still a mess of those old clouds around. I done regular work. Bill worked on Jeff’s car box. Billie went with Lawrence looking for cattle. Bill and I down to Dorothea’s in p.m. Walt down to see Zak tonight, he is a dite better.



Monday, April 17, 1972 Zak better, Bill worked, school vacation

This is been the warmest day we have had for many weeks. It was nice and sunny and warm. But during the day or late p.m. we had a rain shower that passed through, but it cleared in a very nice evening. I did a big wash. I washed lower end of living room rug. I did some more cupboards cleaning. Put some things down in the safe. In evening Es was here. Betty to hospital to see Zak. He was some better. Dorothea and David sick with flu. Carmen up today. In p.m. Betty, Walt and kids down to McDonald’s to get hamburgers.




Tuesday, April 18, 1972 Bill worked for Gordon

Done up regular work. I cleaned my lower cupboards and draws in the kitchen. What a job. Bill worked for Gordon. Jean and Stan came home from Connecticut today. Betty took Kim to Dr. Richards for checkup because of cold etc.





Wednesday, April 19, 1972 hair set, Kim hair cut. Bill worked at Gordon’s.

Got my hair set today. Kim got hers cut. A nice sunny day in a.m., it clouded up in PM. I cleaned cupboards over refrigerator and rest of the draws. I did a dite of cooking today. Kim up tonight to stay all night before she goes to hospital.
