The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

February 27 - March 1, 1972


Sunday, February 27, 1972

A very nice day, sunny and on the mild side. I done regular work. In p.m. Robert and Pat called, a surprise. Also Fern and Lloyd came up. Then in early p.m. Betty called. We had a good fried ham supper.



Monday, February 28, 1972 Shoes for Kim

A beautiful day. I done some work. Betty, Kim, Zak and I over to Norway. Got new shoes for Kim. Came home, I washed, did some work. Zak here while Betty went to town. A very nice sunny warm day. In evening the Deming’s came over. Esther is much to much worried about Susan. I hope she don’t get sick. President Nixon return home tonight and his crew from Peking China. We watched TV. He was well welcomed, thousands greeted him.



Tuesday, February 29, 1972

A very nice mild sunny day. Snow settled some. I done some of my work, got ready, went down to Betty’s to babysit. Betty took Esther to Portland. 




Wednesday, March 1, 1972

A beautiful day. I done regular work. Down to Betty’s while she cleaned her hens out. What a big change in the place. Bill and Christy out riding. Bill outside walking around. I did a dite of cooking. The snow settled some today. Esther over to Betty’s.
