The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

February 4 - 6, 1972 Carmen's 9th Birthday

Friday, February 4, 1972 Cliff left for Florida, NO SCHOOL

Rainy and snowy and bad traveling. No school. It began snowing last night. I went down to Betty’s to help her get ready for the party this afternoon. Betty first had to plow her driveway. A wet heavy snow. It began to clear off about 9:30 AM. In p.m. her guests came, they had a good time. I talked with Lila. Lila came through the operation okay. In evening Billie took me to town. Esther went with us. Watched TV shows in PM. Gordon called in PM. Wind blowed some, and it blowed hard in p.m. Snow and ice during the night. Cliff left for a months visit in Florida, this morning.

Saturday, February 5, 1972 Carmen Christie

Windy. Today Carmen is nine years old. It has been very windy all day and was last night. I made some rolls and baked a few beans. Billie gone with Lawrence. In evening we went down to Betty and Walt’s for Carmen’s birthday. Fern, Lloyd, Dorothea, Dave and Jeff, Esther, Billie, Bill, Billie and me. She got a lot of nice gifts, had ice cream and cake. She was so pleased with her things, a digital clock radio, Osmond Brothers record, guitar, lite and speedometer for her bike, puzzle.

Sunday, February 6, 1972 Lila

A nice clear day, not much wind, just a little. I done up regular work, went down to Fern’s for a little while. She is sick, a dizzy condition and upset stomach. She has been poorly all winter. I looked at the rest of the pile of magazines, now I got to start on scraps. Bill took a shower today and got cleaned up. I got supper, had pigs liver for Billie and soup for Bill and I. Betty made the soup, it was very good. Called at Es. She went down to Fern’s with us in evening. Betty was there too. Fern no better. Got a call from Lida tonight. Lila is very bad, in a coma, and never regained consciousness.
