The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

February 19 - 22, 1972 Betty's 29th Birthday

Saturday, February 19, 1972

Last night or early this morning Milan came, he has three days off. We had a bad storm and blizzard today. It snowed so hard you couldn’t see down to Walt’s when that wind blowed at times. It was an awful day. I had to go to town in p.m. to get the cake. Esther, Cliff and Billie drove to Stoneham Mass.  Darn Fools!!

Sunday, February 20, 1972

A sunny day, but cold and windy. Walt, Betty and kids got up here about two. We had a roast pork dinner honoring Betty on her 29th birthday. In p.m. Dorothea and family came. We had birthday cake and ice cream. Dorothea brought a very pretty cake. Betty had a very pretty hot pantsuit from Dorothea’s family. Billie gave her a set of eight egg cups. We gave her money. Billie gave her a miracle lint brush and Walt and children gave her a stereo components set. It is just wonderful.

Monday, February 21, 1972 Kim got her black cat

Cleared in a.m. Bill had to get the driveway plowed out. Get it all cleared out good. They did yesterday and the awful wind yesterday filled it all in from one side of the driveway to the other side. Carmen came up this morning for a couple days. Milan left about 9:30 this morning. Esther’s folks got home about 3 PM. Took Judd to Dr. Gauger for his shots and operation.

Tuesday, February 22, 1972 windy

High winds today. Betty went to Portland, we took Zak. Carmen stayed here with Bill. Fern stayed with Kim. The wind blowed very hard all day. Roads drifted in some places. We have had snow and a lot of hard wind ever since Saturday.
