The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

February 7 - 10, 1972 Esther Collapses


Monday, February 7, 1972

Cloudy and snow. Turned to flurries then cleared off. Betty and I to town this a.m. to shop. Called at Esther’s. In p.m. I washed Christie’s bed. Got a good fried chicken supper. Called at Fern’s in evening. Es went too. Fern is better. I done regular work.



Tuesday, February 8, 1972

A nice day. I washed. Betty and I went down and called at Dorothea’s. She wanted to run her car to get the battery charged up. Had a nice visit. I didn’t get much work done before I went. Kim came up here after she got home from school.



Wednesday, February 9, 1972 Got pork

Sunny and mild. A very nice sunny day. Not too cold. I washed. Went to town, Esther went with us. Came home, down to Betty’s a little while. Came home, done up some of my work. Went up to Sweden with Bill. Came home. Esther had collapsed. Betty and I went over, Dr. Richards came and gave her a sedative. We was so frightened. It was awful. Billie down to Betty’s for supper. He brought home some fresh pork tonight. Es came over to help wrap it. She want very good.



Thursday, February 10, 1972

Nice and sunny. I washed dark clothes. Did ironing, regular work. Down to Betty’s a little while. Done a dite of cooking. In evening called at Fern’s. Es went with us.
