The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

April 13 - 15, 1972 Zak Back to MMC

Thursday, April 13, 1972 Zak back to hospital

A miserable day, snow everywhere. Bill didn’t work. I went down to Betty’s, Kim home with a cold. Carmen home from school at noon. This and tomorrow is parent and teacher meetings at Carmen’s school. Zak had to go back to the hospital again today. Betty, and I went with her. He was so sick. I stayed at Dorothea’s. Walt met her. He cried so awful when they left him. It is awful. In p.m. it rained hard then turned to snow. Bill stayed with Carmen and Kim. It was awful traveling coming home from Portland. Zak had an infection. He was very weak.

Friday, April 14, 1972 Bill worked, Bill went to Gordon’s to work.

I done regular work, what a mess of snow. I done regular work. Bill and I to town in a.m. Carmen home sick today. Kimmy still has an awful cold. I went down to Betty’s, we cleaned up her house from one end to the other. Betty took me to town. Bill worked at Gordon’s. Betty down to school at noon to see Carmen’s teacher. Carmen is doing very good work. Dorothea with Zak today. He was so sick she said.

Saturday, April 15, 1972

A cloudy dreary day. It rained and snowed in p.m. I cooked, done regular work. Clean closets in bathroom and some kitchen cupboards. Down to Betty’s and babysat while they went to see Zak. He was a very sick boy. Dorothea had been with him all day. He has the flu now. I’ll be so glad when he gets all well and home.
