The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

March 20 - 23, 1972 Entering MMC for Heart Surgery, Or Not

Monday, March 20, 1972

Another nice day. A little cooler than yesterday. Betty, Zak, Kim and I went to Norway to get a few things for the kids to go into the hospital with. Came home, made a pie and some more washing. Bill to the doctors, his head is giving him a lot of trouble. It may be high blood pressure or his eyes. Betty, kids and I called at Fern and Lloyd’s last evening.

Tuesday, March 21, 1972

Nice and sunny in a.m. I washed windows, done regular work, ironed. Betty, Zak and Kim called. Kim had her hair trimmed and thinned, not cut. She is going to let it grow out. A beautiful day, the snow settled. Bill and I rode up to Sweden to see if Jeff’s bike parts is done.

Wednesday, March 22, 1972 Billie 41, rain and snow

Just a miserable day, got up, it had snowed and then it snowed and rained and finally just rained. I went down to Betty’s then Bill and I went to town to get some things for Betty. I came home, got lunch.

Thursday, March 23, 1972 KIM WENT TO HOSPITAL

This morning I got my work done as quickly as I could and went down to Betty’s. Es and Fern were there. We got ready and left about 9:30 AM with Kim to go to the Maine Medical Center in Portland for her heart operation which will come next Tuesday. We went down and got Dorothea and she went with us. We left Kimmy about 2:30 at the hospital. She was contented enough and didn’t act at all nervous.
