The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

June 6 - 9, 1960

Monday, June 6, 1960

A very nice day. Bill didn’t work. I washed, trimmed grass. Bill and I went up on the Ridge and over to Will Holdens looking for pansy plants. Got some over to Hiltons after supper. We set them out. Betty started her exams today. Gordon Sanborn came and harrowed the garden. I cleaned the grain room.

Tuesday, June 7, 1960 Betty pleased and happy

Another nice day except it was cooler. I finished my cleaning today. I did rest of the barn. Gordon came today, hauled out the dressing and harrowed. Tonight after Bill got home we went to town. Bill to see Dr. Skillins. Then we planted some of the garden. Billie hauled rubbish off tonight. Betty came home happy tonight. She had her bookkeeping exam and typing test. She has passed her BOOKKEEPING. She is so relieved and pleased. And so am I. She sure did okay.

A very nice day on the cool side. I finished the ironing. Washed and pressed Betty’s slacks and some sweaters. Betty finished school for this year. Tonight we planted rest of the garden except the rest of the shell beans.

Thursday, June 9, 1960 Letter from Adair’s

Another very nice day. Today I washed out in the barn for the first time this year. Betty home and helped to do the work. In evening she went to the BHS graduation. Blanche, Bob, Joy and Frank went. I took care of Debbie. She was very cute. Raymond called and Kennie and Dot. Betty stayed up to Irene’s. Good news came from Dorothea and Dennis. They may come back to the states.
