The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

May 18 - 21, 1988 Carmen Has Nose Surgery

Wednesday, May 18, 1988

 

Cloudy, fog and rain. We are in for miserable weather rest of the week. I got my work done up early, got ready to go to the eye doctor. Dr. Miller for examination. Came home, got ready and went to Norway and Oxford to order the gravestones for the Cemetery. Also did grocery shopping. Betty, Betty S, Bill, Brogan and me. Billie up to Dorothea’s.

 

 

 

Thursday, May 19, 1988 CARMEN NOSE OPERATION

 

RAIN RAIN RAIN. Today Carmen to the Osteopathic Hospital for nose operation. I hope it is going to help her. Billie up to Dorothea’s today.

Friday, May 20, 1988

 

A miserable day. It has rained and been cloudy. I washed and made a apple pie. We watched TV shows. Bill and I over with Betty to see Carmen. Kim too went. She didn’t feel too good. Dennis took Brogan to his mother’s with him for a few days which is a big help.

 

 

 

Saturday, May 21, 1988

 

Well it has been another cloudy miserable day. There was some breaks and about 7 PM a nice bright sun appeared but clouds all around. It didn’t last too long. I did the work. Washed floors, made a cake, vacuumed. Carmen is still suffering with her nose. She rested some today. Bill not too good. Billie down to the shed and cleaned it out. Zack dug up some more rocks today from the road, driveway, Cemetery. Betty and Walt over to Lewiston, got their paper and some things for Carmen.
