The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

July 31 - August 3, 1970


Friday, July 31, 1970

Kind of hazy but still awful hot. I did more beans, washed a dite. Went to town. Also to town after supper with Bill and called on Susan. Came home, called at Betty and Walt’s.



Saturday, August 1, 1970 RAIN and showers

It was cloudy and rain. I done up regular work, to town. Bill went to see the doctor. He has a touch of arthritis in his arm. Came home. In p.m. went for a ride over to Ingalls Hill to the Sid Gray place. What a road. Called on Aunt Ava after supper.



Sunday, August 2, 1970

A very nice day but hot. The Horton’s took Bill and I up the coast to Rockland, first time I ever was up there. A beautiful day. We had a very good time. It was the Seafood Festival.

Monday, August 3, 1970

Another hot day. Billie’s car acted up, he didn’t go to work. I did some washing. Betty tried to work on her wall. Susan and Vince up to Fern’s today. Bill mowed lawns after supper. Billie trimmed and cleaned up around all day.
