The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

July 27 - 30, 1970


Monday, July 27, 1970

Down to Betty’s to babysit while Esther, Susan and she went to Portland to attend some business for Susan. They called at Dorothea’s. I did Betty’s wash for her.



Tuesday, July 28, 1970

A nice day. But still awful hot. Dorothea up. She called on Susan. Up here for supper. We had string beans, they liked them, we all did. I was at Betty’s. Betty and I made root beer here and at Betty’s.



Wednesday, July 29, 1970 HOT

HOT. Another very hot day. Did regular work. I babysat for Betty while she did her lawns. It was so hot and hard for her. The lawnmower acted awful. Susan and Vince up here in evening. She called Tom. Es and Cliff here also.



Thursday, July 30, 1970 HOT

HOT. Another very hot day. I done up regular work, down to Betty’s to babysit while she took Aunt Ava to town. I helped her to get beans and peas fixed. She help me get some ready for deep-freeze. I washed a dite. I called on Fern after supper with Betty. Esther and Cliff left this morning. We expect them back in a few weeks bag and baggage.
