The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

April 6 - 9, 1964



Monday, April 6, 1964

Fair. Today went to town. Done some business in p.m. Betty and I to Portland and done some business, came home, had supper. Dorothea cleaned up the whole house, rearranged furniture in living room. She made that room look a lot better. In evening we looked over some of Mama’s things and then Dorothea and Betty down town. Done the washing at laundromat. Called at Barbara’s. Betty bought her a new bedroom set.



Tuesday, April 7, 1964

Cloudy and stormy all day. We done just regular work. Kind of relaxed. In p.m. Kennard, Fern, Lloyd, Aunt Ava called also Mr. Lackee. Dorothea and Blanche to Portland. Tonight we moved Mama’s bed upstairs and Bill began working in her room getting it ready to be redecorated. Dorothea and Betty over to Blanche’s after supper.



Wednesday, April 8, 1964

RAIN RAIN RAIN. I finally got all my thank you cards off and all things done. Also got Esther’s letter off. In p.m. Dorothea, Blanche and I down to the Cemetery. Came home, cleaned, painted in bedroom. Betty started the painting. We got supper. After supper Betty’s new bedroom set came. We all like it very much and she is so pleased about it. She worked up there all evening. Dorothea and I down town in evening. Then Dorothea down to Barb’s in evening.



Thursday, April 9, 1964

A nice day. Betty had Roland and Louise up here and they papered and finished painting Carmen’s room. Here for lunch and supper. In evening Bill, Dorothea and I out for a little while. Called at Ferns. Mama has been gone one week today. I miss her so much.
