The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

April 30 - May 2, 1968 Carmen Broke Her Arm

Tuesday, April 30, 1968 Carmen Broke Her Arm

Another nice day. I worked on the cupboards today. I brought up all the dishes from down cellar. I got them all washed and put away. The cupboards look very pretty. This afternoon I got a call from Betty. Carmen fell off her bike and broker left arm. Also lost a tooth. She was taken to hospital emergency ward and had it set and put into a cast.

A nice sunny day. I cleaned the rest of the kitchen draws, cupboards and all. I also did the last coat of varnish. Bill painted the porch floor tonight, harrowed the garden, spread the lime. Billie did some more fencing. I put the screens on the kitchen. Stanford’s heifer got out. Barbara, Christie and I got her in. I called in and saw the kitchen at Stanford’s, it looks nice. I talked with Betty and Carmen. Carmen’s arm is coming better

It has been some cloudy today but clear in p.m. It has been on the cold, raw side. I washed. Settled my closets and cleaned out and picked over things in the bureaus. Minnie and Patty called. I cleaned all the silver. Tonight Bill and Billie laid a strip of rug on the breezeway over the part coming in from the garage. The house looks so very nice.
