The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

June 14 - 16, 1974

Friday, June 14, 1974 Kennard 73rd birthday, 50th WEDDING ANNIVERSARY OF KEN AND DELORES, LAST DAY OF SCHOOL, A NICE DAY

A nice day. I went down to Betty’s. We picked the kids clothes over and the chest. Joy and her girls called at Betty. About 10:30 AM the girls came home from school for the beginning of their summer vacation. Carmen will go into the sixth grade next year. Kimberly the third and Zak in kindergarten. In p.m. Betty, Zak, Kim and I went to town. Betty down to Ferns and painted porch rail. Bill got one end of the barn done. Brud, Verna and Cathy came tonight to help Ken and Delores celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. Delores said she wasn’t able to do anything, she has been poorly.

Saturday, June 15, 1974

A fair day. They worked on the barn. Got the rooms petitioned and tie up sheathed. I did a dite of cooking, cleaned up etc. Betty up and Walt. Kim was up. Esther called and Lloyd. Carmen had a good time playing with Cathy all day and then they all went over to Verna’s brother’s for a cookout in evening.

Sunday, June 16, 1974 RAIN ALL DAY

Very heavy rains today all day. It was Father’s Day. Bill got T-shirts, a dress shirt, Eagle and a $10. We went down to Betty’s for a chicken lunch or dinner, very good. The Thomases also. They got a lot more done in the barn today.
