The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

August 29 - September 2, 1958



Friday, August 29, 1958

Letter from Adair’s. Did regular work. Took Pat home (Sanjuleo) in eve. Pat and Betty went up in plane at Naples. They and Norma went for a ride speedboat. Aunt Linnie bad this a.m. Milan and Betty came late in evening. Betty over to Fryeburg.



Saturday, August 30, 1958

Hot. Milan’s folks here, we done the work. They went to town and over swimming. Mama and Milan over to Aunt Linnie’s in late p.m. Raymond and Bobby called in evening.

Sunday, August 31, 1958 Hot

Milan’s folks stayed over. We did a little washing, got dinner. In a.m. Billie took me over to Aunt Linnie’s. Aunt Linnie’s very weak. Bob is better, he and Blanche called. Also Fern and Lloyd. Had supper out.



Monday, September 1, 1958

A nice day. I washed. Milan and family went home. Called, back home at 11:30. Kennard called. Charlie and Jean called. A guy called to see Betty. Mowed lawns. Bill and Billie worked.




Tuesday, September 2, 1958

I churned, ironed in p.m. Went to town in p.m. Betty, Dawn and I did a little more school shopping. Kay up here tonight all night. Cold today.
