The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

August 13 - 18, 1958



Wednesday, August 13, 1958

Nice day. I worked over to Mrs. Rushmore’s in a.m. In p.m. I cleaned up the house, got ready for Milan’s folks. They came about 2 PM. Billie hauled hay home.



Thursday, August 14, 1958

A nice day, not too hot. Milan, Norma, Fern and I went to Pownal and called on Donnie. He was very well. Good to see him. Betty and I washed in a.m. Mama sick all day. George Staley died. Kennie called. Dawn came up with Lassie three times.



Friday, August 15, 1958

A nice day. Mama better. We canned corn and string beans. Milan and Betty and Norma over to Fryeburg to call on Betty’s sister. Betty came home tonight from Portland. Raymond came to see the wood.



Saturday, August 16, 1958

I cooked. Went to George Staley’s funeral with Ava and Uncle Lewis. Milan’s folks came home from Fryeburg and got ready to go away, left about 12:30. Norma stayed up.



Sunday, August 17, 1958

I done up the work and cleaned up the house. Bill finished the back of tie up. Fern and Lloyd up in p.m. Took us for a ride up to Sweden. Had Italian sandwiches for supper.



Monday, August 18, 1958

Showers early in a.m. Cloudy and showers all day. I did get the washing done. Betty up to Dawn’s and Aunt Ava’s. Norma and Betty played up stairs all morning.
