The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

November 12 - 15, 1974


Tuesday, November 12, 1974

I done up my work. I went down to Betty’s to help her do her work. She was away all day. She went to her meeting in a.m. and in p.m. she helped Bonnie to clean her house she is going to move into. I cleaned my living room. Zak here in a.m. while Betty was gone. Billie back to work. Bill didn’t do much today. Went to the dump. It has rained all day study. We need it for the wells and ground is a little dry.



Wednesday, November 13, 1974

I cleaned the kitchen today, done regular work. Went down to Betty’s a little while. Dawn called at Betty’s. Bill took me to town late p.m. Bill worked at Betty’s.



Thursday, November 14, 1974 PERMANENT $25

I got my fall permanent today at June’s. I was down to Betty’s in p.m. and evening while she went out to supper with Walt. She went to Portland with Maryanne and met Walt. Had a good supper, browsing around over the Maine Mall. Billie hurt his back tonight, he is very lame. Bill worked at Betty’s today. Betty paid Bill.



Friday, November 15, 1974

Betty and I to Portland. I got some more drapes for the living room. They are very pretty. We got a new cat, very pretty tiger and white. Bill worked at Betty’s all day.
