The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

December 22 - 24, 1974 Christmas Eve

Sunday, December 22, 1974

This is been a miserable day. It rained and snowed. I done a lot of work today, got Kimmy off to Sunday School. Billie called at Fern and Lloyd’s, also Chet’s. In p.m. Esther and Cliff called. We watched for Walt’s sister and family to go by. They got to Walt’s at about 3 PM. It began to clear off after they came. Betty and Sandra brought the girls up.

This is been a cloudy snowy and clearing day. Very cold this morning. I done my regular work, put my wash out. Made fudge. In p.m. I went down to Betty’s, we made cornballs. Betty’s folks had a very nice visit with Sandra and her family. Carmen and Kim went home at about 7:30. Carmen had an asthma attack.

A beautiful day. I was busy finishing up all the jobs for Christmas. Cooked, cleaned up the house etc. Had supper early. Then we all went to Fern and Lloyd’s while they opened their gifts then we ate and came up here and all watched us open our gifts and had a lunch. Dorothea and David didn’t make it. Fern, Lloyd, Esther and Cliff and the Horton family. Had a very good time. Tomorrow we go to the Horton’s for the big time.
