The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

December 25 - 26, 1975 Christmas Day

Thursday, December 25, 1975 COLD

Up early. It was clear but it clouded up and was a very cold cloudy day. We have had very cold weather for a long time now. I got down to Betty’s about nine. Bill went and got Fern and Lloyd. Billie took Billie Deming down to Susan’s. We got the dinner to going and had a very good fire in Betty’s kitchen stove. We got all the dinner over it and it all cooked so good. At about 11 all the gifts were opened. We got dinner on to table and at about 1:30 all done eating and Dorothea and Dave had left in time for Dorothea to get home to go to work. Everyone had a lot of very nice gifts and had a good time. Missed the Deming’s. Billie D came in late p.m. I got a new coat.

When we got up it was still snowing, about 6 inches had come. It snowed until about noon and then turned to a freezing rain. Bill plowed, Billie worked out in the barn. Went up to Chet’s house than down to hospital to see Chet. I didn’t do much today except regular work. I got all papers read. Betty’s folks relaxed. It was still raining when we went to bed about 12:30. We didn’t get up until very late.
