The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

December 7 - 10, 1975

Sunday, December 7, 1975

A beautiful clear day, but very cold. Kind of windy still. The wind blowed so hard last night. I have been very busy all day. I took bath, I got breakfast, washed, done up all housework. Changed beds, mended, ironed, made out some Christmas cards. Lloyd called. Billie went with Lawrence in a.m., up to Chet’s in p.m. Kimmy called. Carmen rode horseback. Bill didn’t do anything as usual, did take p.m. nap. He gets bushed with nothing to do.

I was down to Betty’s all day. We wrapped all her Christmas gifts. A very very cold day. It snowed off and on during the day, late in PM and in early evening. We got about 3 inches.

A rainy day. The snow which came last night all gone tonight. I made a blueberry pie, donuts and cooked a boiled dinner. I did a big wash. Betty dried everything. I babysat in late p.m. at Betty’s while she took Freya to the vets for her eyes. Phyllis called on Betty all p.m. She is having such a hard time trying to get Delores and her business taken care of. Betty and Carmen called in evening. Only half day of school.
