The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

December 21 - 24, 1975 Christmas Eve

Sunday, December 21, 1975

A bad storm last night, all day it snowed. I worked every minute all day preparing for Christmas. In evening I went to the Christmas program with the Hortons at the M.E. Church. It was very good. Kim and Zak in it.

Tuesday, December 23, 1975 Chet to Hospital

A nice sunny day but on the cold side. I have been busy all day preparing for Wednesday. I have cooked some. I washed my windows. In p.m. Bill and I went to town. Delores went with us. The chocolates came today. In evening Betty, kids and I went around to see the Christmas lights. We went up to the hospital. I went in to see Chet. He is in good spirits. I hope he won’t be in there too long.

A very nice bright sunny day, but very cold. It is the wind which makes it so awful cold. It has blown for nearly a week most of the time. I cooked, Kim helped. Also she helped clean up the house also. We washed kitchen floor and waxed it. Got an oyster stew supper. Got ready and went down to Fern’s. Billie Deming went with us. We watched them open their gifts. Then all came up here, Hortons, Yates, Deming and us. We opened urs. Billie got his scanner. Police radio. I got a new coat. We all got so many nice things. A good time. We had refreshments.

Santa came
