The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

October 4 - 7, 1975

Saturday, October 4, 1975

A very nice day. Mild and sunny. I done a lot of work. Kimmy here also Zak while Betty went down to Dawn’s. Kim made her chocolate mousse. Bill and Billie finished spreading the manure. It sure stinks but it will make the grass grow a lot.

Sunday, October 5, 1975 finished hauling rest of manure

Quite a nice day. Later in the p.m. the south wind came up and it got quite hazy. I did a very big wash. Clothes got dried and I did my ironing. Bill, Billie, Walt and Betty hauled all Walt’s manure out today. All the Horton kids took baths up here. Today a man looked at the lot and wants it.

Monday, October 6, 1975 Got Donkey

Today we began to clean Betty’s house. Got the upstairs all done. Holly and George worked on the chimney. Bill had some gravel come to put down by the spring. They got the trucks stuck in the mud. Betty went down to Betty’s and got the donkey. Brought him home in the station wagon. Kathy Flaherty went with Carmen to help hold them. Had no trouble at all getting him home.

Windy and cold. I did a big wash today. Down to Betty’s in p.m., she got her bedroom and den all done. I ironed the curtains. I cooked two fowl today, one for us, one for Betty’s family. Bill began work at Betty Johnson’s cottage. Ilan is helping him.
