The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

September 18 - 21, 1975

Thursday, September 18, 1975

Well, most all day it was sunny. They came after the safe at noon. Jones came and put the pump in at the well. I was at Betty’s most all day.

The rain held off until about noon. It clouded up. Rained hard. It was showery in a.m. In p.m. it rained hard and all evening. George and Holly worked at Betty’s all day until late at night. Betty couldn’t go down to Thena’s. Those kids of Holly’s wrecked the whole place down there. It was awful. It was a nice evening at Thena’s, the slides were very interesting. Had a nice time. Fern, Lloyd, Cliff, Esther and me.

Saturday, September 20, 1975 Our well gave out last night again

A heavy rainy day. Not at all cold. On the muggy side except for dampness. It let up enough on the rain so they got Betty’s well cleaned out and pumped out. Walt worked all day on soil testing. Billie went with Lawrence. Cliff and two children called. Bill, Betty, Carmen and Steve did it. Betty’s family up for supper last night. Rained so hard all night.

Sunday, September 21, 1975 David, hooked on to the spring today, took rooftops off

It was foggy when we got up but the clouds soon broke up, fog left and out came the sun. I changed all the beds and did a very big wash with the new spring water. Kim up here today and took a bath. Bill and Billie took off ours and Lloyd’s back porch roofs. Lloyd called. George and Holly working on the chimney, Walt helping. Dorothea and David are splitting up again. She called Betty this morning. Things haven’t been too congenial since they went back in July.
