The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

June 27 - 30, 1967 Meeting Walt


Tuesday, June 27, 1967 WALT called here

Another very nice day. I washed in my new Maytag washer. I like it very much. Betty came up in a.m. Carmen came up and spent the day. Betty took Kim home tonight, too cold here for her. After supper Walt, Betty and children called here. We all approve of him on first sight. Bill and Billie liked him very much. I hope he continues to come.



Wednesday, June 28, 1967

Another nice hot summer day. I washed things that got wet in the cellar. Betty came up and did a wash. Minnie called. Fern, Lloyd. Bill and Billie put up some more insulation tonight. I went to town and got rinse for my hair.



Thursday, June 29, 1967 Hair Set

A nice day. I got up early. Lloyd came for me at about 9:30 AM. I went over to June’s, got my hair set. They came after me about noon. Betty came up, we did a wash. We like the automatic washer.



Friday, June 30, 1967 Kim to Portland MMC for checkup, good condition

I got up and it was cloudy, on the cold side. I done up my regular work. Betty came up, I got ready, we took Kim to Portland for checkup. Doctors and nurses pleased to see her and said she had gained remarkably well. Very pleased. She looked like a doll. Very pretty. I came home, done up work. Washed floors etc. Bill took me to town. Carmen here all night.
