The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

June 23 - 26, 1967


Friday, June 23, 1967 RAINED ALL DAY

Cloudy, dreary dismal day. Betty’s doors and windows came today. She seems so happy. Walt was down last night at their house. Late this p.m. it cleared off. Dorothea and Jeff came up. We went to Betty’s and Joys. Joy over here. Sun came out late this p.m. Bill and I to town after supper. Betty and kids up for supper.

Saturday, June 24, 1967 HOT

A very nice hot day. Bill, Billie and I worked down cellar. Betty done my washing. She brought Kim up today to stay for a while. Walt over this weekend. Bill and Billie did a lot of odd and end jobs. I got some things ready to go upstairs.



Sunday, June 25, 1967

Another hot day with thundershowers in PM. I was very busy all day. Bill filled in the ditch. Billie worked at Chet’s. Carmen, Betty and Walt on a picnic. Dorothea, Dave and Jeff called, had birthday cake and ice cream for Jeff. Had thundershowers. Larry Thomas here for cake and ice cream.



Monday, June 26, 1967

Cool and kind of windy. I done regular work, took care of Kimberly. Carmen came up. I picked over some things, went down cellar and got a few things up. After supper Aunt Ava, Uncle Lewis called. Also Mrs. Stanford and boys called. Bill and Billie hooked up the new washer and washed. Ed Davenport buried (?) today.
